Newcastle and Tottenham left England just hours after their final Premier League game of the season to travel to Australia for the clash in Melbourne on Wednesday. The fixture has proved controversial for being played so soon after the campaign and before the major international tournaments.
Trippier, 33, had recently returned from a calf injury he sustained in March, only featuring in the last three league games of the season. A fresh injury will cause problems for Southgate's team ahead of the European Championship, leaving just Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is often preferred in midfield, available as natural right-backs.
Southgate and ex-Tottenham full-back Trippier will hope that the issue is not a serious one, with England set to face Bosnia-Herzegovina in a friendly on May 29 before their Euro 2024 campaign gets underway.
